The first track on side A, “What He Said” tactfully yet forcefully treads the line between house and techno, cherry picking physiognomies from each side of that ever-blurring line and constructing something fresh but bristling with familiar Subject Detroit elegances. Punchy but bulky kicks keep a disciplined array of percussion pegged down as the “What He Said” vocal – alongside a couple more waves of snarling percussion - makes a sudden entrance. A brief break changes the complexion of the track again as the vocal fleetingly gives way to sparsely applied synthetic melody before the vocal barges its way back into the frame, as the two combine and spiral the track to a poignant close.
All the tracks are great but Stepper is the standout for me! pounding syncopated kicks, rolling handdrums and playful sample work, dancefloor destroyer. Jack G.
A stunning journey through Detroit's Black musical traditions from one of the city's longtime beat music stalwarts. Bandcamp Album of the Day Nov 16, 2022
